Question of the Month

Q:  I am currently going through menopause and was on put on Bio-identical hormones of Tri Estrogen and Progesterone. I am currently off HRT and have the following question. I have recently read about the connection between too much estrogen and dry eyes. However is there any link between dry eyes and deficiency of of any one hormone in the system ?

A: There can be many causes of dry eyes so I recommend getting checked by an
ophthalmologist. There is one study suggesting that estrogen can cause this and some think
testosterone can help but neither is proven. At this point there is no standard hormone treatment for dry eyes. Any hormonal treatment that is tried would have to consider the person's overall situation re safety and appropriateness.

Hope this is helpful.

Sincerely,
Geoffrey Redmond, MD
